     So, I've seen how these sorts of questions go over around here. I know I'm opening myself up to a lot of troll answers, and angry defensiveness, and cagey suspicion, and this is me saying I'm okay with whatever comes my way. Bring it on. Because at least one of you is going to give me a straight answer, and I guess...

     [Slevin is sitting in his room talking to the communicator, toying with something in his hands. It flashes gold just at the edge of the view screen when he hesitates to look down at it, takes a breath, continues anyway:]

     I guess that's what I need. Just one. So: what was the worst thing you ever lost?

What about when something happens to one of you?

It's the barge. Everything here is transient by nature. Especially for inmates. We could vanish at any moment, our attempts at redemption meaningless.

That's not an answer.

But it's the only answer we have. It could at any time. Just like I could go home redeemed and find out I have lung cancer from a life time of smoking.

We control nothing. The barge throws that into sharper relief -- especially for inmates. That's all.

And what do you do then? Just die? Just accept that?

Well, eventually, we're all going to die.

I don't think I can answer the question you're asking. I think the only one who can answer -- is it worth it, is this what I want -- is you.

I find Mira's presence in my life worth the possibly of losing her. That's my answer.
